1) Darwaza gas crater or “the Door to Hell” - Turkmenistan

As claimed by the geologists, “Gate of Hell” was discovered in 1971, at the center of a vast, empty desert in Turkmenistan a drilling rig accidentally hit a huge covert natural gas cavern, due to which the ground collapsed, the entire machine fell in it and a very toxic gasses started leaking at a frightening rate. However, it’s said that, the soviets apparently hid the extent of the catastrophe, left no paper trail, not even a report. Hence, the formation or the existence of the pit is not confirmed. It’s also said that during the drilling, to prevent this potential environmental threat, the Soviets left the pit burning, thinking it would stop in a few weeks. But even after many decades the fiery pit is still going strong.
According to a different theory, this pit being the only light and heat source at night, the crater is very appealing to the animals around. It is said that camel & spiders will obviously be attracted by its warmth, will go closer and plunge to their deaths.
Canadian explorer, George Kourounis the first person to have ventured into the pit says, “The story behind how the place came into existence has been sort of shrouded in mystery. It is very unique, in terms that there’s no other place where there is this pit of burning methane that’s being ejected from the ground at high pressure”.
Thus, even with numerous legends and theories, the mystery of Darwaza Gas Crater’s creation and existence remains and it continuous to be a place that’s invokes everyone’s curiosity.
